The Whetstone of Lucius Artorius Castus
Throughout Britain, stories are told about the Sarmatians: first, about their horsemanship, but secondly, of how those wounded by Sarmatian blades always die. Those stories have coalesced around the stories of the whetstone of Lucius Artorius Castus, the first Roman commander of Sarmatian cavalry in Britain.
“If a brave man sharpened his sword on the whetstone, then the sword would certainly kill any man from whom it drew blood. If a cowardly man used the whetstone, though, his sword would refuse to draw blood at all.”
